Governor's Office Said Most Jobs Were Public Service Sector

Updated: 1:55 pm CDT October 13, 2009

More than 8,200 jobs were created or saved in the state thanks to federal stimulus money, according to an audit submitted with the federal government.

All 50 states were required to submit the report on Saturday and Gov. Jim Doyle's administration released highlights on Tuesday.

The governor's report shows that Wisconsin was awarded just over $1.9 billion in stimulus money during the first reporting quarter. The report says that money helped created or save 8,284 jobs.

Doyle's office said the majority, about 6,100, were public service jobs such as teachers, police officers and firefighters.

The White House predicted that Wisconsin will see 70,000 jobs under the stimulus by the time all the money is spent.
