GAYS MILLS, Wis. -- After being hit by floods in 2007 and again in 2008, the entire village of Gays Mills is moving to higher ground.A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday at the new location.Village leaders decided last November to purchase 30 acres of high ground and build new homes and businesses on it.Plans call for 35 new lots for single-family homes and townhouses. The village also expects to move its community center, library and government offices to the new area."This isn't going to be something that's going to happen over night. It's going to be years in the making. But once it starts, I really expect to see a lot happen quicker," said Larry McCarn, Gays Mills village president.McCarn said it's taken a lot of advance planning, work and cooperation in order to bring the relocation project to this point. The new development is expected to cost about $13 million. The village has secured grants from the state and federal governments as well as money from private investors.
