Updated: 8:49 pm CDT September 18, 2009

Dane County Coroner John Stanley was laid to rest Friday, and hundreds came out to pay their respects.

Stanley died unexpectedly of natural causes on Sunday afternoon. An autopsy of the 63-year-old showed he died of cardiac-related causes.

The longtime county leader and Vietnam veteran was honored at a DeForest funeral service Friday.

Law enforcement, fire departments and EMS vehicles led a precession from Christ Lutheran Church after the funeral to the cemetery Friday.

Stanley served three tours of duty in Vietnam, and he was given a full military funeral.

Stanley served in the EMS and began as deputy coroner in 1991. He was first elected coroner in January 2001.

He had recently announced that he wouldn't seek another term in office and would retire in November 2010 to spend more time with his family.
