'Abraham Lincoln' Visits Camp Randall

Program Held To Celebrate Lincoln's Birthday

Truly historic figures gathered at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison on Saturday to celebrate the bicentennial birthday of President Abraham Lincoln.

Members of the First Brigade Band, a re-creation of a Civil War-era Wisconsin band, performed, and a program honoring Lincoln's life was presented. Gov. Jim Doyle was on hand to speak with actors portraying Lincoln and former governor Alexander Randall.

"So many of our young men assembled here on the grounds of Camp Randall to preserve the union and free the slaves went off to fight on bloody battlefields," said Doyle.

"Once the war started," said the man portraying Lincoln. "Wisconsin made a great contribution, not only in numbers, but also in the tenacity of what they called the 'Badger Boys.'"

Camp Randall Stadium served as both a training camp and a POW camp during the Civil War. Later on Saturday the First Brigade Band held a concert at the Wisconsin Union Theater.
