MADISON, Wis. -- A former Mineral Point man who killed his foster family 25 years ago is wanted by authorities in Florida. In 1983, 14-year-old Peter Zimmer pleaded no contest to killing his adoptive parents and 10-year-old brother. Zimmer served four years in juvenile detention before being released at 18.He is now wanted on suspicion of stalking in the Tampa, Fla., area.Zimmer is now 40 and goes by the name Jovan Anton Collier. The Saint Petersburg Times in Florida is reporting that police are searching for him.The paper said police have ramped up the search for Collier, who is accused of repeatedly harassing and vandalizing the home of a woman who broke up with him.Police said Collier's past makes the threats more serious. More than two decades after the slayings, some local residents still recall the case."It was a shock to everybody. That was probably one of the first big murder cases you would say that we have run across," said Mike Reilly, of the Dodgeville Chronicle. "To see the police tape and the number of officers around, it was just not a great time, and it was a shock since it was such a young kid that did it all."David Federman, a former Mineral Point police officer, said he thinks Zimmer was released too soon."They should have never let him out. He's nuts," Federman said. But the law was different in the 1980s and said Zimmer "must be freed" when he turned 18."They changed the law after that, that if you're 14 and you commit murder you can be incarcerated," Federman said.Reilly said he wishes more had been done to help Zimmer as a youth, even if it meant a longer stay behind bars."He was not treated like an adult like he would be in this day and age," Reilly said. The interim police chief in Gulfport, Fla., said they're worried that Collier can't take no for an answer. He said police believe he's currently in Atlanta. There's no word on if investigators believe Collier might try to return to Wisconsin, but they said he's been in Florida since shortly after his release from juvenile detention.
