Madison Police Crackdown On Illegal Fireworks

Fines For Violations Begin At $329

Posted: 12:25 am CDT July 5, 2009

Madison police continue to be on patrol this holiday weekend as officers crack down on illegal firecrackers.

Police were out on Saturday night and officials report that patrols will continue for the next few days. Anyone found putting on a non-professional, illegal fireworks show could face a significant fine, authorities said.

Confusion over what is allowed as part of a home fireworks display is understandable, particularly since each community has different standards and employees at some fireworks stands will say just about anything to finalize a sale.

Fines for fireworks violations start at $329 and increase dramatically for repeat offenders.

Despite acknowledging the illegality of fireworks in Madison and the stiff fines inherent for violators of fireworks laws, the Madison Fire Department lists several safety tips on its Web site for people using fireworks privately.

Those tips include:

  • Always read and follow label directions;

  • Always have a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby;

  • Never try to re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks;

  • Never give fireworks to small children;

  • Never throw fireworks at another person;

  • Never carry fireworks in your pockets;

  • Never take fireworks or pets to public firework displays. Fireworks are dangerous around large crowds and pets. Dogs especially have sensitive hearing and do not tolerate fireworks very well.
