Madison School District Hit By Budget Cuts

Hit Larger Than Expected

Updated: 1:00 pm CDT July 3, 2009

The Madison Metropolitan School District needs to slash more dollars from its budget.

District officials said on Thursday the total cut in funding will be about $9.2 million, or 15 percent. That's about $1 million to $3 million more than the state Department of Public Instruction previously told the district to expect.

The state budget was supposed to cap the cut at 10 percent, but the governor vetoed a portion of the budget offering the protection.

The school district is looking into the discrepancy in numbers, officials said.
