Madison Fire Team Helps Rescue Those Trapped On Ferris Wheel

Ride Stopped At About 8 P.M.

Updated: 12:14 pm CDT June 29, 2009

At least a dozen people were stuck on a Ferris wheel at the Rhythm & Booms festivities in Madison's Warner Park on Sunday night because of an apparent mechanical failure.

Madison fire officials said that the wheel stopped moving, trapping riders onboard. The ride stopped just after 8 p.m. after the ride cable fell off its track.

After a couple of attempts, police and fire crews were able to secure ropes from the ride to a nearby fire truck and tractor-trailer and slowly bring the wheel around and unload the passengers.

Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth said that they brought in the technical rescue team.

No major injuries were reported, but two police officers were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

An investigator from the state Department of Commerce reviewed the incident and inspected the ride on Monday. The results of the investigation are expected in a week.
