MADISON, Wis. -- A bicyclist who was struck and killed on Madison's East Side on Friday night apparently didn't stop before crossing a busy intersection, according to a witness. This isn't a rare occurrence. The sight of bike rider after bike rider, slowing down but not coming to a complete stop before crossing the busy East Side intersection of East Wilson and South Baldwin Street is a familiar one."The difference between stopping on a bicycle versus stopping in a car, it takes a lot more energy," said bicyclist Jonathan Walton, of Madison. Then there are bicyclists like Caleb Cambell who don't even bother looking. When asked if he saw the stop sign before going right through it without stopping, Cambell said, "No, I saw it."He said he was in a hurry to get home."I've been hit quite a few times," he said. Not obeying the two-way stop on Baldwin Street might have cost David Nieft, 45, his life on Friday. Police said at least one witness told them that Nieft didn't stop at the stop sign before crossing.Local leaders are urging bicyclist to follow the law."My message is wear a bike helmet stop and everyone needs to follow the rules," said Common Council Member Marsha Rummel.Following the tragedy, Rummel, whose district includes the intersection, said she is asking for a closer look at the two-way stop."This is one of the few places in the Capital City bike path that's on the street so it is unusual," she said.Rummel said she contacted city traffic engineering to potentially make this a four-way stop.Bike riders like Terry Millar said they'd like to have speed bumps in the area."I understand that the cars they're just turning off Williamson Street. They'd probably prefer not to stop again but maybe at least speed bumps to warn them that says, major bicycle crossing," said Millar.Rummel said she expects to hear back from city traffic this coming week. The investigation into the collision that killed Nieft continues but police said it appears the victim was also not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police said that the driver of the car, whose name isn't being released, is cooperating in the investigation.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
