Teens Bound Over For Trial In Fatal West Side Shooting

Teens Face Life If Prison If Convicted

Updated: 5:47 pm CDT June 25, 2009

The two 16-year-old suspects charged in connection with the shooting on the city's West Side earlier this month were bound over for trial on Thursday during their preliminary hearings.

Prosecutors allege Kendrick Briggs, of Madison, (pictured right) and Deandre Bernard, of Joliet, Ill., (pictured left) shot Karamee Collins, Jr., 17, in the back and killed him on Leopold Street, near the Meadowood Shopping Center, on June 9.

Prosecutors allege that Briggs wanted to get back at Collins for punching him in the face several months ago.

During Thursday's hearing, the prosecution called a 14-year-old girl who testified that she saw a gun in Bernard's waistband before the shooting and that after the shooting, he told another friend he "messed up" and was crying.

Another witness called by the prosecution told the judge that he gave Bernard a gun that he had stolen at about 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. on the night of the shooting.

Some testimony Thursday said Briggs asked Bernard to shoot Collins. One witness testified that he also seemed happy about it afterward.

But Bernard's attorney called all of it "innuendo" and "speculation."

"There's no been no connection between whether this gun was the murder weapon, and so I just don't think there's probable cause to believe he was involved in this," said Jon Helland, Bernard's attorney.

The judge said there was evidence that Bernard "at least" was party to a homicide and should stand trial.

"I find there's at least reasonable inference that can be drawn that a crime was committed -- a felony was committed -- and Mr. Bernard was the person who committed it," said Judge David Flanagan.

Bernard's family had no comment.

Briggs waived his preliminary hearing and will stand trial on the same charge of first-degree intentional homicide, party to a crime.

Briggs allegedly helped hide the gun after the shooting, authorities said.

The criminal complaint said that Briggs told investigators that Bernard shot Collins.

The complaint said the suspects first met several years ago while students at Toki Middle School. The complaint said Briggs told detectives that he is a member of the gang the "Cutty Mac Boys" and had a history with Collins, including a fight in February. The complaint said a witness heard Bernard and Briggs vowing revenge against Collins because he gave Briggs a black eye in the February fight.

If convicted, they face up to life in prison.
