Police: 3 Young Boys Behind West Side Burglary

Youngest Suspect Is 8 Years Old

Updated: 8:29 am CDT June 25,2009

Three Madison boys are facing charges in connection to a burglary on the city's West Side.

The youngest of the three suspects is just 8 years old. Investigators released details about the June 9 arrests on Wednesday.

Two men called police after witnessing the alleged crime shortly after 9 p.m. Police said the witnesses held the 8-year-old suspect on the ground until they arrived.

The boy told officers he and two older boys, age 11 and 13, rode their bikes to Blueprint Sports & Urban Wear, 745 S. Gammon Road.

The youngest suspected burglar said the 11-year-old used a brick to smash out a window, which triggered an audible alarm and sent the 11 and 13-year-old running away from the scene.

The 8-year-old said he stayed behind, went inside and grabbed a new pair of shoes because the 13-year-old threatened to beat him up if he didn't get the shoes, according to police.

The incident report shows the boy was crying and bleeding -- apparently cut from the jagged glass while entering and exiting the store.

The boy was treated at the scene by an emergency medical technician with the Madison Fire Department.

The 8-year-old was arrested for burglary and released to his mother. The older suspects were later arrested at their homes and each face a charge for party to a crime of burglary. They were also released to relatives.
