Updated: 4:33 pm CDT June 17, 2009

Fitchburg police are investigating a fatal shooting early Wednesday morning.

Police said there was a disturbance between several people at an apartment building in the 3300 block of Leopold Way, just before midnight on Wednesday.

Police said one of the people involved in the disturbance brandished a gun and fired multiple shots, striking two people.

Both victims were taken to area hospitals.

One of the victims, a 23-year-old Madison man, was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to police. The Dane County Coroner's Office has identified the victim who died as Detarius Martin, of Madison.

The Dane County Coroner's Office said preliminary autopsy findings indicate that Martin died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

The second victim is a 27-year-old Fitchburg man who suffered non-life threatening injuries.

A person claiming to be the shooter called the Dane County 911 Center and was able to speak directly to police right after the shooting happened, according to county officials.

Authorities said that person is now in police custody.

Fitchburg police said that Perry E. Lucas, 28, of Fitchburg, has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

An autopsy will be performed on the victim at the Dane County Coroner's office.
