Watchdog Group Seeks Campaign Finance Reports

Wis. Democracy Campaign Filing Open Records Requests

Updated: 9:08 am CDT June 6,2009

The Wisconsin Democracy Campaign is filing open records requests that seek campaign finance reports from nearly two dozen legislative candidates and office holders.

State rules required the reports to be filed four months ago.

The political watchdog group said a total of 22 people failed to comply with those rules.

The 2008 reports were supposed to be posted on the Government Accountability Board's electronic filing system on or before Feb. 2.

Mike McCabe from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign said there are two problems -- the delay and the delivery.

"A computer project that was supposed to make public access to this kind of information easier is simply not working," said McCabe.

The Government Accountability Board said this year's delays are no different from other years because the current system does not penalize candidates until after 45 days.

A new rule, which still needs government approval, would penalize candidates after six days.
