What's The Caloric Fallout Of Brat Fest?

Event Broke World Record Over Weekend

Brat Fest set a new world record over the weekend with more than 208,000 brats served.

One viewer wondered about the health consequences of overindulging on brats and asked, "Just how bad are these things for you?"

A quick Facebook poll indicated the average brat eater consumed three brats over the weekend, WISC-TV reported.

"(One) does take care of one day's core allowance of saturated fat (by eating a brat)," GHC dietitian Deborah Roussos said.

But that's just the beginning. Roussos said the brat, a bun and some ketchup add up to about 500 calories.

"It's all that fat that makes it juicy and tasty," Roussos said. "That is all saturated fat, which means its solid fat at room temperature. And that's the kind that's not so great for your heart."

There are 22 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, in each brat. But dietitians said the condiments can offer some benefits.

"All the good condiments you put on it -- onions have a good property of helping your blood stay slippery," Roussos said. "Ketchup, you might know, has lycopene in it."

But just counting the brat and bun, Brat Fest attendees ate a total of 98,113, 440 calories. That includes about 5,010,048 grams of fat, or the equivalent of about five small cars.
