MADISON, Wis. -- Madison-area residents, concerned about Washington's stance against Iraq, are gathering for a different sort of rally tonight.
Tuesday night's "Not In Our Name: An Evening Of Conscience" event will feel more like a performance than a protest. It will feature skits, speeches and song, but the goal remains the same -- to send a message to the president.
"We're on the edge of disaster," said retired UW-professor Robert Kimbrough. "I'm 73-and-a-half -- I've never seen the world in worse shape than it is right now."
Madison Mayor Sue Bauman, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, former mayor Paul Soglin and Matthew Rothschild, editor of The Progressive donated $200 apiece to add their names to a two-page ad opposing war that ran in The New York Times that ran Monday under the banner "Not in Our Name."
"It's urgently important for Americans to speak out against this war that George Bush is planning," said Rothschild. "I think it won't make us safer. It will just increase terrorism both abroad and at home."
About 400 people contributed at least $200 to the Bill of Rights Foundation to be included.
"We must take the highest officers of the land seriously when they talk of a war that will last a generation and when they speak of a new domestic order. ... We are confronting a new openly imperial policy towards the world and a domestic policy that manufactures and manipulates fear to curtail rights," the ad read.
The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater and is sponsored by the Madison Area Peace Coalition.
Featured musicians include Oscar Brown, Jr.; Lou and Peter Berryman; Jan Wheaton; Will and Dot Williams; and the Doug Brown Band.
The event is free, and information tables and leafleting are allowed.
For more information contact Robert Kimbrough at (608) 238-1266, or Jean and Charles Sweet at (608) 233-8190 or notinourname@tds.net.
