Grandmother Faces Charges

Updated: 7:36 am CDT April 20, 2009

Dane County Department of Human Services is reviewing the overdose death of a 3-year-old girl at a YWCA homeless shelter in Madison.

The department contracts with the YWCA to provide shelter for homeless women. Amaya Walker was living at the shelter with her grandmother, who has been charged with child neglect resulting in death.

Human Services director Lynn Green said her department if following up with the Y about possible risks.

YWCA chief executive Eileen Mershart said if they had any information that Amaya's welfare was at risk, they would have reported it.

A criminal complaint said the child ingested oxycodone and Valium and that Walker had a prescription for the oxycodone.
