GAYS MILLS, Wis. -- While discussions continue about relocating the entire flood-ravaged Crawford County community of Gays Mills, area residents said that they're preparing for the worst yet again. The village has been hard hit by flooding twice in recent years -- first in August 2007 and again in June 2008, WISC-TV reported. It's enough time for Chris Smith to rebuild his business, Blackhawk Auto, in the village's downtown, but the fear is still there"The fact remains that the water more than likely (will) come up again," Smith said. "I don't think it's a question of if, but a question of when. And twice in 10 months is just shattering, especially to our morale."Village President Larry McCarn said that the flooding has been difficult for residents."They forget what they went through and don't remember how bad it was and some people just sit back and don't realize they've got to be a part of this to keep going for a recovery," he said.Village leaders said that they're hoping they'll be approved for grant money to help move the community, but they said half of the city's charm is its proximity to the river and the state highway -- both helping bring new people to town.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
