MADISON, Wis. -- A $215 million tax on large multistate businesses has cleared the state Senate with no Republican support. The plan pushed by Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle is slated to pass the Democratic-controlled Assembly later on Wednesday.Doyle introduced the proposal last week and is expected to sign it before Friday. The fast-tracked bill is urgently needed to start reducing the state's budget shortfall, which is projected to grow to $5.7 billion by mid-2011.The bill passed by the Senate would cut $700 million off of that, with the rest made up in a two-year spending plan Doyle introduced on Tuesday.Republicans and the state's business community rallied against tax increases, saying they are the wrong approach in a recession.
