Cub Foods On Verona Road Slated To Close
Beloit, Green Bay Stores Also Set To Close

MADISON, Wis. -- Cub Foods is closing its grocery store on Verona Road in Madison in the spring.A resident of the nearby Allied Drive neighborhood said the store's closing is "shocking."Cub Foods officials said that the decision came as part of a company wide evaluation of all its stores. Among the closings is also a store in Beloit and two in Green Bay.The Madison store is scheduled to shutter by mid-March.Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz asked the company to reconsider but company officials declined.The closing comes in the midst of a city renovation project in the Allied Drive neighborhood.Community member Minnie Rogers said that the closing will be hard for area residents."It's just hard, all these people," she said. "We're a community. Why should we be lacking of a store? You know, what do they want us to do?Rogers said many residents walk to Cub for their groceries and will now have to take a bus or a cab to get them. She said she hopes another store will move into the area.The mayor's office said that Cub Foods has agreed to work with the city to get another grocery store in the Nakoma Shopping Center.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
