Police Arrest Suspect In Thefts Of Car, Scooter, Presents

Suspect Allegedly Returned Gifts For Store Credit

Updated: 6:35 pm CST December 18, 2008

Police said Thursday that they arrested a man suspected of stealing an elderly couple's car, pawning their motorized scooter and cashing in the Christmas gifts that they had bought for their grandchildren.

Fitchburg police said officers arrested Oran Woodfin on suspicion of shoplifting Thursday morning.

Authorities said a 90-year-old Madison man parked his car close to the doors of a Target store on Dec. 10, left the car running and went in the entry area to help his 88-year-old wife who has trouble walking. When he went back toward the door, he saw someone moving his car and ran after it, yelling for the thief to stop.

Madison police said they believe Woodfin pawned the couple's motorized scooter and returned all the presents in the car to a Target store in Rock County in exchange for a store credit.

Police said the stolen car has been returned to the couple.
