Madison's only professional theatre company said the economy is forcing it to make what it calls "significant changes" to ensure the company remains artistically and financially strong.

The Madison Repertory Theatre's board said management and staffing changes will include layoffs. The number is not being released.

"With these changes, the company is totally focused on continuing to create the high-quality shows our audiences have come to expect and enjoy," said Ruth Domack, president of the Madison Repertory Theatre’s Board of Directors. "The Rep Board will increase its role in financial management and fundraising, to ensure that even in this economic climate, the Madison Rep has the budgetary strength it needs to continue to produce great theater."
