Authorities said they believe that Dutter, 12, was fatally shot by his father, who then apparently shot himself. They were found wounded Tuesday in a sport utility vehicle near Haen Family Park and the Greenbriar Apartment Complex at High Point Road and Tree Lane on Madison's West side. They were rushed to a hospital, but authorities said Kyle Dutter died later Tuesday and his father, Ryan Dutter, died Wednesday.

Don Johnson, superintendent of the Middleton-Cross Plains School District, said Kyle Dutter was a six-grader at Glacier Creek Middle School.

"He was a very thoughtful and kind young man," Johnson said. "Our staff and our students certainly are grieving at this point."

Glacier Creek Middle School Principal Tim Keeler said that six staff members worked closely with Kyle Dutter.

The school received news about Kyle Dutter's death Tuesday, and there were up to five additional crisis counselors at the school Wednesday to help students and staff.

"There've been two or three that I'm aware of that have come forward, that's students and staff, (and) have sought some help," Keeler said.

Keeler said Kyle Dutter attended Glacier Creek Middle School since September. He had previously attended school in Beloit.

"Kyle was new to us, so from a student standpoint, he wasn't real well known amongst the student body. But the staff knew Kyle, and I think the staff is struggling a bit more but holding up well," Keeler said. "We were really hoping to know him better."

This is the second death involving a Glacier Creek Middle School student. The district said a student died of natural causes a month ago.

"I think that we find that people are strong and that they pull together and that they support one another in difficult times," Johnson said.

The principal at Glacier Creek Middle School said that by the end of the day, they reduced the number of grief counselors but will keep as many as needed.

There are no immediate plans for a memorial for Kyle Dutter. School officials said they are in close contact with the family and will do as they wish.
