Ryan Dutter was hospitalized in critical condition with injuries that police called life-threatening for most of Tuesday and Wednesday before he died."We found a young man who was seriously injured from a gunshot wound or wound, and his father was also wounded from what we believe was a self-inflicted wound," said Joel DeSpain, Madison Police Department spokesman. "Later on, after these people were transported to the hospital, the son did unfortunately pass. His father remains alive but with life-threatening injuries."DeSpain said that police don't believe there's a risk to the neighborhood. Police said the father and son didn't live in the neighborhood where the Jeep was found.Authorities responded to the scene just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday after an anonymous caller asked that they check on the welfare of a person in the vehicle.Investigators aren't saying if they found a gun in the Jeep, but they said there is no risk to the public. Investigators are also not saying anything about a possible motive."We have a lot of information on this case that we're not at liberty to share yet," DeSpain said. "This is the very early stages of this investigation. The detectives will be talking to family. They'll be putting together this puzzle."Kyle Dutter's grandfather, Kenneth Bach, of Beloit, said that his grandson was an inquisitive boy who always had a big grin on his face. Kyle's grandmother told WISC-TV that the family is still in shock over what happened.Court records show the boy's father and mother divorced in 1999. Bach said that Kyle lived with his father during the week and visited his mother in Beloit on weekends. Kyle had attended Glacier Creek Middle School in Cross Plains since September.Middleton police said that the owner of the Jeep is Ryan Dutter's girlfriend, but she is not the boy's mother. Police said another anonymous call came into the Middleton Police Department after the shooting, asking to check the girlfriend's welfare. Police said she is OK, WISC-TV reported.Records show that Ryan Dutter had recently been undergoing financial difficulties. He had been a mortgage broker and filed for bankruptcy last fall.Kyle Dutter's father registered a Web site in August. On the Web site, Kyle Dutter talks about his love of Halloween and there are pictures of him at a haunted house.Friends told WISC-TV that Kyle Dutter loved to ride horses. In fact, he spent many years at SMILES in Darien -- a horse ranch for developmentally disabled children. Those at SMILES said they're torn up over the loss, but said they will always remember how determined Kyle was to accomplish what was in front of him.WISC-TV has found a MySpace.com Web page of a girl who appears to be Kyle Dutter's sister. On it, the woman claiming to be Kimberly Dutter said that "Kyle will always be remembered forever." Photo galleries on the page show the woman with her younger brother. Friends have added their condolences to the page, reacting to the sad news.Neighbors of both Kyle Dutter's mother, Laura Dutter, and his grandparents in Beloit told WISC-TV that Kyle was a playful child who loved to talk and ask questions about everything around him.As neighbors of Kyle Dutter's grandparents, news of Kyle's death completely sidelined the Brandenburg family."I was completely in shock, completely surprised, unfortunately," said Tom Brandenburg. The Brandenburgs said Kyle was a playmate of their son's."Kyle would go over and grab a basketball out of the garage and (our son) would come out and they'd shoot some baskets," said Karen Brandenburg.Neighbors say their heart is also with Ryan Dutter, who they said say no matter what might have led to Tuesday's tragedy, loved his son."He would walk down the street with his son. Sometimes he'd help him ride his bike down the street. He'd help him hold the bike so he wouldn't fall," Karen Brandenburg said.A neighbor who lives next to Kyle's mother's house said that Kyle loved the trampoline. She said when she pulled into her driveway Wednesday and saw it in the backyard it felt like she'd been kicked in the gut.Neighbors said Kyle's mother no longer lives there. Earlier this year, neighbors said a tree fell on the house, damaging it to the point that she had to move out. They said she now lives they with her boyfriend in Rockford.WISC-TV has also confirmed that Ryan Dutter was an educational assistant at McLenegan Elementary School in Beloit for a semester before moving to Madison this year.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
