Dane County Coroner John Stanley said Tuesday night that the boy, Kyle Dutter, of Middleton, died from a gunshot wound.

The father survived and was hospitalized. His name wasn't released.

Officers responded to the scene at about 9:11 a.m. near the intersection of High Point Road and Tree Lane after receiving an anonymous call. An anonymous caller told police to check on the welfare of a person in the vehicle.

Officers found the man and his son in a black, 2006 Jeep parked near the Haen Family Park and the Greenbriar Apartment Complex. Both had been shot and were taken to a hospital.

"We found a young man who was seriously injured from a gunshot wound or wound, and his father was also wounded from what we believe was a self-inflicted wound," said Joel DeSpain, Madison Police Department spokesman. "Later on, after these people were transported to the hospital, the son did unfortunately pass. His father remains alive but with life-threatening injuries."

DeSpain said that police don't believe there's a risk to the neighborhood. Police said the father and son didn't live in the neighborhood where the Jeep was found.

Madison Common Council member Paul Skidmore said he was shocked by the incident.

"I was stunned. I got to say I was very stunned. It's very unusual to have this type of crime in this area," Skidmore said.

Skidmore said the area has a lot of visitors.

"There are a number of apartments, (and) there are a number of people that have visitors. There are a lot of people that come in from outside the community to the neighborhood. They use the park; it's a wonderful park," Skidmore said.

By noon on Tuesday, police had towed the vehicle away. They said their investigation continues.

Madison police aren't saying if they found a gun in the Jeep, but they said there is no risk to the public. Investigators are also not saying anything about a possible motive.

"We have a lot of information on this case that we're not at liberty to share yet," DeSpain said. "This is the very early stages of this investigation. The detectives will be talking to family. They'll be putting together this puzzle."

Middleton police said that the owner of the Jeep is the girlfriend of the man involved in the shooting, but she is not the boy's mother, WISC-TV reported.

A second anonymous call sent Madison as well as Middleton police to check on the welfare of the man's girlfriend after the shooting. Police said she is OK.
