A woman accused of helping her religious leader hide a decaying corpse on her toilet so they could continue collecting her Social Security agreed to a plea deal and was convicted of a misdemeanor on Monday.

Tammy Lewis, 36, of Necedah pleaded no contest Monday to obstructing a police officer and was fined $350.

Prosecutors accused Lewis and Alan Bushey, 58, of hiding 90-year-old Magdeline Alvina Middlesworth's body on a toilet in Lewis' home in Necedah after she died in March. She apparently hide the corpse in a bathroom for several weeks.

Investigators said that Middlesworth and Lewis were members of a religious sect that Bushey led.

A criminal complaint said that Bushey told Lewis that God would revive Middlesworth, who friends and family said was from Washington state.

Investigators said that they believe the pair wanted to collect the woman's Social Security checks.

Lewis had faced more than 35 years in prison, WISC-TV reported. Court records said that as part of Lewis' plea deal, Judge John Roemer deferred prosecution for two years on five other charges.

Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth said that Lewis will take the stand as part of the deal.

"The key witnesses really are the children," Southworth said. "But, of course, Tammy Lewis will provide excellent testimony for us about the background of the cult and workings there in."

Bushey faces three felony charges and will be in court in April.
