Two officers were injured after an inmate attacked them on Monday morning at the Fox Lake Correctional Institution in Dodge County, according to a state Department of Corrections spokesman.

The incident began at about 8:15 a.m. when a correctional officer in the prison's furniture shop was attacked by an inmate with a claw hammer. A second officer came to the guard's aid and was hurt.

A third officer came and held the prisoner down until help arrived, officials said.

Both officers were taken to area hospitals and one was released.

The Dodge County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.

Authorities said that the prisoner involved in the attack was taken to a different institution and is being segregated from other prisoners.

Officials said that the facility is in a precautionary lockdown. They said that visitation at the prison is still going on, but all activities are otherwise canceled.

Department of Corrections spokesman John Dipko said that inmate had worked in the furniture shop for two years.
