A mother and her three children escaped from a fire in their Madison duplex on Thursday night.

Firefighters were called to the family's home in the 100 block of Corona Court after 8 p.m. Upon their arrival, firefighters said that they saw flames through a front window.

The family had fled the home without injury, according to the Madison Fire Department.

The mother said that she had been cooking on the stove and then went downstairs to attend to the children. She said when she returned to the kitchen, she could see flames on the stove and up the wall behind the stove. She attempted to douse the fire with a home extinguisher, but wasn't able to. She told fire officials that she then left with the children.

According to the Fire Department, investigators are looking into the blaze.

They said that damage to the home and its contents is estimated at $75,000.

The adjoining unit wasn't damaged. The family has no renter's insurance.
