The sheriff's department said Craig Severson, 46, died and Lisa Morgan, 27, is in critical condition after the incident Friday afternoon at an apartment building in the 2500 block of Valley Street. Both are from Cross Plains.

Dane County Coroner John E. Stanley said that preliminary autopsy results indicate that Severson died due to multiple gunshot wounds.

On Friday, Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said the shooting was a targeted attack and authorities don't believe the general public is in danger.

"These individuals were acquainted with each other, and it appears at this point to be an intentional act that took place as a result of a confrontation between these individuals," Mahoney said.

Officials said they are looking for Charles E. Witzel Jr., 42, who has been preliminarily identified as a suspect. Officials said Witzel has ties to Arena and Loganville and that he is considered armed and dangerous.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Department said that anyone knowing the whereabouts of Witzel should call 911 immediately. Authorities said Witzel has a prior violent record.

His vehicle was located in Middleton but was not occupied. Police said they believe Witzel got a ride from someone and fled.

Authorities said that they believe Witzel might be travelling in a silver colored 1992 Toyota pickup truck with Wisconsin Plates of EV4861.

Investigators spent much of the overnight Friday executing a search warrant and processing evidence at the scene.

Cross Plains Police Chief Tom Janssen said a small child was in the apartment at the time of the shooting. He said the child wasn't harmed and is currently safe. Janssen said a handgun was used in the shooting and that the suspect does have possible access to other weapons.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office and Cross Plains Police Department are continuing to search for Witzel and investigate this incident. Anyone with other information related to the case is asked to call the sheriff's office at 608-255-2345.
