Madison police are looking for the gunman in an early-morning shooting Monday on the city's south side.

Police responded to a report of a shooting around 4:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Baird and Center streets.

Police said a 24-year-old man was shot in the ankle and told police that several shots were fired at him. The victim is being treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the SWAT team searched a nearby house for the gunman Monday morning, but the house was empty, WISC-TV reported.

Police said they believe the victim was targeted and that the shooting was not a random act.
