Anti-War/Pro-Immigrants' Rights Rally Held At Capitol Square

Event Timed To Coincide With War's Anniversary, Columbus Day

Updated: 2:45 pm CDT October 13, 2008

An anti-war protest/immigration rights rally drew a crowd to the state Capitol on Sunday.

The event was part of a series of national rallies set for Oct. 11, which is the sixth anniversary of the start of the War on Terror, and Oct. 12, which is Columbus Day and acts as a symbol against raids and deportations.

Protesters said no to the war at home and no to the war abroad.

Alex Gillis, of the Immigrant Workers Union, said that some immigrants endure a climate of fear.

"Scared to go to schools, scared to go to home, scared to got o work," he said. "We are afraid to be stopped for anything and end up deported. We are not criminals. Our families, we are good citizens. We just don't have the papers."

Nationally, the protesters hope their issues are recognized by the presidential nominees.
