UW Marching Band Returns To Camp Randall

University Reserves Right To Reinstate Suspension

Updated: 1:59 pm CDT October 12, 2008

On Saturday night, the University of Wisconsin Marching Band made a comeback after being suspended from last weekend's Badger football game.

School officials said the investigation into serious hazing allegations is still ongoing, but the UW Marching Band is once again permitted to play at football games.

Some fans said that they were glad to have the band back. One fan said of the band's return, "It was invigorating. It was so much fun. It just wouldn't be the same if they weren't there so we were really glad that they were there tonight."

Another fan said, "I think it was louder. I think there was more action. People were glad the band was there."

Yet another concluded, "I was nice to have them back. I hope they start acting like good citizens now."

Band director Mike Leckrone suspended the band for last week's Ohio State game after allegations of hazing surfaced. The game marked the first time in Leckrone's 40-year career that the band didn't perform at a home game, WISC-TV reported.

University officials said that 70 band members were interviewed and provided information that confirmed details of hazing complaints involving alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct by some band members during the Michigan trip in late September.

Officials said that the band will not travel with the football team for now, and school officials said they reserve the right to reconsider the lifting of the suspension should other complaints surface.
