Fans React To UW Marching Band Reinstatement

Band Suspended Over Hazing Allegations

The University of Wisconsin marching band is cleared to play in Saturday's game at Camp Randall, after an investigation into hazing last week led to suspension of the band for last week's game against Ohio State. Fans now ponder whether these actions were serious enough to match the punishment.

"I mean, the fact that they've been in trouble before puts them in a hard spot, but I also have some friends in the band and they say it probably was a measure that didn't have to be taken that extremely," said Amy Boerneke, a UW-Madison grad student.

"My dad was in the band," said freshman Betsy Pike. "And he'd tell us these hilarious stories, and I feel like it's getting worse and worse every year."

But out of these incidents comes debate over whether the suspect behavior of a few band members are just a part of college life.

"These actions, although may be seen as college-type pranks, also have a lasting impact on those who are on the receiving end," said UW Dean of Students Lori Berquam. "And those are the ones I'm really concerned about."

"You come here, it's a school of 50,000 people; everywhere you go you have to meet new people," said Mike Starr, a UW freshman. "And obviously gaining their respect and friendship is something you're going to have to do every time you go out."

Nonetheless, the band's student leaders are ready to move on.

"It felt terrible, and it was an embarrassment not to be a part of football at Camp Randall on Saturday," said drum major Jon Alfuth. "We believe that as a group, we can overcome the actions of a few, and that we can start fresh with a culture of respect."

The challenge for director Mike Leckrone is moving the band forward together.
