Updated: 8:18 pm CDT October 8, 2008

A 22-year-old University of Wisconsin staff member and a 24-year-old UW student were walking on a bike path near Charter and Spring streets when a male approached them, robbing them by gunpoint early Wednesday.

He showed a handgun to the two men, before one took off running -- the robber chased him and stole money from his wallet, WISC-TV reported.

The suspect then jumped into the passenger side of a car.

A sketch of the suspect released by the police list the suspect as a black male, 6 feet to 6 feet, 2 inches tall, more than 200 pounds, and was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and pants and a baseball cap with the letters NY on it. The sketch appears similar to at least one of the three suspects identified in other campus area robberies, WISC-TV reported.

Police said it's possible the armed robbery in the UW area is connected to a string of other campus area robberies.

"We've had an ongoing concern about some of the robberies we've been seeing taking place generally in campus area sort of near Regent Street," said Joel DeSpain, public information officer for the Madison Police Department. "Certainly this one that took place this morning fits the general pattern and in that we have a black male with a handgun."

Neither victim was injured.

Anyone with information is urged to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014
