University of Wisconsin-Madison marching band director Mike Leckrone told WISC-TV on Monday that he made the right decision in suspending the band from Saturday's home Badger game against Ohio State.

discussionTALKBACK: What Do You Think?

It's the first time in the director's nearly 40-year history that the marching band didn't perform at a home game.

Leckrone said that while his decision may have been somewhat impetuous, he is comfortable with it and believes he did the right thing.

He said he wanted to act quickly after he was approached with credible information about possible band misconduct.

According to Leckrone, he was at band practice on Friday when he was approached by the dean of students, the dean of the College of Letters and Sciences and UW-Madison Police Chief Sue Riseling.

The three said they had several people present them with allegations they felt were credible.

Leckrone said that in light of past conduct problems, he felt something needed to be done quickly.

The long-time director denied he felt pressure to suspend the band. He has assisted the dean's office with its investigation.

Leckrone said the investigation should wrap up within the next day.

Two years ago, the band was put on probation for hazing, sexually explicit behavior and alcohol use incidents on a road trip to Michigan.

UW-Madison officials said the new reports are very similar.

Public uproar over the suspension has continued online. Bloggers and others both in support and against Leckrone's action have been actively posting comments on the Internet.

It has not been decided if the band will get to play during Saturday's game against Penn State.
