The new arrivals from southeast Texas arrived via horse trailer Tuesday morning at the Dane County Human Society where the already financially strapped shelter is making a plea for donations.

Despite being about $300,000 in the red the last two years, the shelter agreed to help out a Houston-area shelter hit by Hurricane Ike -- and the homeowner who tried to become its back up.

Nancy Hobson, director of Pineywoods Animal Welfare Society, said, "So, I have about 45 dogs and I'm trying to take care of them and the power goes out and you have no water, so, right then you know you're in trouble."

Hobson, the founder of PAWS shelter, said she was so relieved to get some relief.

Her home was inundated with puppies and dogs -- either homeless or surrendered from people who lost their homes to Ike.

But it was all too much at her house so she asked for help and got it.

Now, Dane County is asking for help.

"It's been a tough year 2008. We've had Iowa flood dogs, we've had horse neglect cases and now these 19 dogs from Texas," said Gayle Viney, spokesperson for the DCHS. "We're happy to help out but we definitely need the community support right now too."

The shelter is asking families to adopt a dog or puppy, or, if you can't, consider making a donation.

The animals are getting vaccinated and spayed or neutered. They should be available for adoption starting next week.

There are six puppies and 13 dogs. Officials said they're all in pretty good spirits -- considering the trauma they've been through and the 25-hour ride north in Hobson's horse trailer, WISC-TV reported.
