Governor Headed To Detroit To Talk With GM

Janesville Plant Slated To Close In 2010

Updated: 8:54 pm CDT September 11, 2008

Gov. Jim Doyle is leading a delegation to Detroit on Friday to talk with General Motors officials about a planned closing of the automaker's plant in Janesville.

State Department of Commerce spokesman Tony Hozeny said the state is trying to work with the company to see what can be done in Janesville.

The automaker plans to close the plant by 2010 because high gas prices have curtailed sales of SUVs, leaving hundreds of people without jobs.

Hozeny says the state's efforts to look at whether millions of dollars in grant money given to GM can be reclaimed is on hold while talks about the plant's future continue.

Doyle's spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner said that he can't comment on what specifically may be talked about at the meeting. He said it is a sensitive process.

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold said he will host a meeting with General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner in Feingold’s Washington, D.C., office on Friday afternoon.

“I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Wagoner and tell him directly how important it is that GM maintains a presence in Janesville. I will once again ask him to reconsider GM’s decision to end production in Janesville and to retool the Janesville plant for a new line of vehicles to maintain the excellent workforce Janesville offers. I will also ask that, if it is unwilling to reconsider its decision, GM do all it can to help Janesville find a productive use for its GM facility, such as helping to bring in another company or industry to take advantage of the tremendous assets Janesville has to offer. It’s the least GM can do for the decades of hard work this community has provided. I appreciate Mr. Wagoner’s willingness to meet and I look forward to continuing to work with members of the Wisconsin congressional delegation to do what’s best for Janesville," said Feingold in a news release.
