A charter bus with Boys and Girls Club children onboard had its brakes lock up, causing them to overheat and smoke, which forced the bus to pull over on the Beltline on Friday around rush hour.

The right-hand lane near the Seminole Highway exit was closed and the children were evacuated from the bus. There were no injuries.

Police said that a Madison Metro Transit bus was called to the scene and took the children to their destination.

Town of Madison Police Officer Burt Boldebuck said the charter bus was taking children ages 5 to 10 years old from an outing back to the Boys and Girls Club on Allied Drive when the brakes locked up.

The bus driver immediately pulled over, and in doing so, the brakes heated and caused some smoke.

Boldebuck said three Boys and Girls Club counselors did a phenomenal job of getting the 74 children off the bus in a single-file line along the shoulder.

Traffic was backed up for about 20 minutes while they waited for the Metro bus and loaded the children on it.

Boldebuck said about a half a dozen parents tried to pick their children up, but, due to the traffic situation, and helping out the Boys and Girls Club, police directed these parents to pick their children up at their destination on Allied Drive.

Boldebuck did not have the name of the bus company that the children were on.
