Madison Fire Department spokeswoman Lori Wirth said flames were shooting 20 to 40 feet in the air as firefighters arrived at 5 Odana Court around 4 a.m.

Wirth said the flames were visible from the Beltline and that dispatchers received many calls from motorists.

"What we saw was a fire that had a pretty good start by the time we got there, so our firefighters took the defensive strategy right away and didn't enter the building. It quickly became unstable. The roof is completely destroyed and one wall is close to collapsing at this point," Wirth said.

The two-story building housed two organizations -- 4-C Community Coordinated Child Care and Lutheran Social Services. These organizations serve the disabled, childcare organizations and families seeking adoption among others, WISC-TV reported.

The billowing smoke closed the 6300 block of Odana Road to traffic for about two hours.

Two water towers were set up to beat down the flames. Firefighters knocked down the fire at 5:05 a.m., but the water towers remained to cool hot spots and prevent the fire from reigniting.

Authorities said the building is a total loss. George Hagenauer, the building's owner, said it was appraised at $2.2 million.

"What we plan to do is to maintain our services as normal and do everything we can to re-establish ourselves on a temporary basis, a temporary location," said Jody Bartnick of 4-C Childcare.

"In the immediate term what we're working on is finding an alternate location so our services to mainly our clinic clients is uninterrupted as possible," said Meg Groves with Lutheran Social Services.

One of the major concerns for both organizations is just how much has gone up in flames including computers, equipment and records.

"The part of the building that was least damaged was where our adoption offices and clinic offices were so we're hopeful we will be able to retrieve some of that," said Groves.

Said Bartnick, "Unfortunately we have lost a lot of records but the good news is that as we are moving forward in the 21st century a lot of our records are being kept online."

Wirth said no estimate is yet available regarding the value of the building's contents.

No one was in the building during fire, and no injuries have been reported.

Wirth said investigators hope to enter the building sometime Wednesday to begin their investigation of the fire's cause.

The Madison Fire Department said Engine 7 will remain at the scene for much of the day Wednesday to monitor hot spots.

With no one injured, everyone can start to move forward together.

"You want to get your arms around the community but all the employees that you support and that you work with just to let everyone know that we're going to get through this," said Bartnick.

Said Groves, "We've been in this location for more than 10 year and shared the office space with 4-C so its really kind of at this point in time feeling like a big family trying to get together."

Regular office phone lines will be open by tomorrow: 4-C Childcare can be reached at 271-9181 and Lutheran Social Services can be reached by calling 277-0610.

The emergency line Wednesday night for Lutheran Social Services Mental Health Clinic is 800-645-4303
