MADISON, Wis. -- The largest reward fund in Madison's history won't go to anyone until there is a conviction in the Joel Marino case.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThat's the latest from Bryan Bazan, the best friend of murder victim Joel Marino, who administers the reward fund.Madison police have said there was no one key piece of evidence that lead to Adam Peterson's arrest for the murder.WISC-TV reported that if and when the $45,000 fund gets dispersed, it's possible it could go to roughly half a dozen community tipsters. The private reward fund which promised money for clues about who entered Marino's house during the day and killed him ballooned in the months following his murder in January. Two eyewitness accounts, one composite sketch and hundreds of other tips later, police arrested 21-year-old Adam Peterson at his mother's home in Minnesota.Police contend Peterson's DNA matches the murder weapon and that he confessed during taped phone calls to his family. So which tip or tips really helped police find him?The head of the Marino murder investigation said it was not just one single clue."I think vaguely we're talking about a half dozen pieces of information from the community that lead us to where we are right now," said Capt. Jim Wheeler, of the South Madison Police District.Wheeler said that police would not get involved with deciding which tips carried more weight."We're not going to be the ones to put the weight on those pieces of information," said Wheeler. "That'll be up to the fund administrator."Bazan started the fund and said that only he can release the money.Right now, Bazan will only say that any potential dispersals will be "based on a conviction" and that he's "not going to make a decision on his own (that) there will be a review process."Lou Marino, Marino's father, said he'd like to be a part of that process. He has no inside information on that, or any potential payouts, but he said he believes those who provided proven help in finding Peterson should be rewarded.
