The nonprofit group Living Lands and Waters is leading the cleanup, and the group is seeking volunteers to help retrieve debris from the river.

Living Lands and Waters had initially scheduled the cleanup along the Wisconsin River to begin Monday, but the start date has been pushed back a week.

The Illinois-based group will haul its equipment to the Wisconsin Dells Tuesday, and it is set to begin the process of removing debris from 89 sites, covering 24 miles, next Monday morning.

The group is known for similar cleanup efforts, most recently in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Since the group is made up of about 10 people, it is asking for some extra help from the community. The group is seeking volunteers 18 or older to ride in boats to retrieve debris.

"I'm looking forward to working with the Friends of the Lower Wisconsin River and the (Department of Natural Resources) on this project. I've never really worked with the DNR so closely, and this will be a good opportunity for us to do so," said Chad Pregracke, of Living Lands and Waters.

The total cost of the cleanup will run about $85,000, WISC-TV reported.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is covering 75 percent of the cleanup costs. The Wisconsin Emergency Management Agency will pay for 12.5 percent of it, and the remaining 12.5 percent is split between Sauk County, Columbia County, the DNR and the Village of Lake Delton. That is about $2,500 for those municipalities.

The project will likely take 25 days, and the group said it needs about five volunteers each day.

To volunteer, people can visit the group's Web site or call the office at 309-496-9848.
