DeForest Man Killed In Dane County Motorcycle Crash

Fatal Collision Occurred Early Saturday

Updated: 1:03 pm CDT August 11, 2008

Authorities in Dane County said they are investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist who officers had been chasing earlier.

Michael S. Paul, 33, of DeForest, was killed Saturday morning after his motorcycle collided head-on with a suspected drunken driver on U.S. 51 just north of Grinde Road in Winsor. Paul was not wearing a helmet.

Authorities said Paul was weaving in his lane, and that a Dane County sheriff's deputy began to pursue him. The deputy terminated his pursuit because Paul was carrying a passenger on the motorcycle.

Seconds later, authorities said the deputy saw the motorcycle stop and the passenger dismount. The motorcyclist then continued to flee.

A DeForest police officer saw the fleeing motorcyclist and began a pursuit. Authorities obtained the identity of the motorcyclist from the passenger, and the DeForest officer ended the pursuit.

After the chase ended, Paul continued on U.S. 51 and crashed into a Honda Accord being driven by Rachel Hron, 22, of Sun Prairie.

Hron, who was taken to a hospital for her injuries, has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
