Police officials identifed the man as 33-year-old Gregory D. Wilson.

Madison police said they responded to the 800 block of West Badger Road around 9 p.m. Tuesday on a report that a Madison Metro driver was attacked by one of his passengers.

The driver and witnesses told police that a man and a woman were arguing when they boarded the bus and that the man used vulgar language.

Police said that when the driver asked the man to watch his language, the man "unleashed a barrage of poorly chosen words at the driver."

The driver picked up his phone to call police, but before he could connect, authorities said the man started punching the driver repeatedly in the head while the victim was still belted into his driver's seat. Police said the driver was punched 10 to 12 times in the head.

Police said the man then fled the bus, and the woman who was with him said they had just arrived from Chicago and were in the process of looking for housing.

Authorities described the perpetrator as a black man with stocky build in his mid-30s and 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall. Police said he has shoulder-length braided hair and a beard and was last seen wearing a baby blue T-shirt and blue jeans.
