2 Recovering After Light Plane Crash At Watertown Airport

Federal Aviation Administration Investigates

A pilot and his wife are recovering after a plane crash Saturday in Jefferson County.

A light plane they were in crashed into some hangars at the Watertown Municipal Airport, setting off an explosion.

Aviation fans at the airport ducked for cover as the crash developed.

Watertown Mayor Ron Krueger, who lives nearby, said the two in the plane were flying in for a cookout before their planned flight to Oshkosh Sunday for the Experimental Aviation Association AirVenture fly-in and convention.

The two are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries suffered in the crash Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses said the plane touched down, went out of control, went back into the air and crashed into the end of a hangar, setting off an explosion.

The mayor said an airport employee helped pull the two from the plane. That employee, Curtis Loontjer, said the plane exploded as he was running toward it. He said he could see two people on the grass near the plane, and he managed to get both of them away before more explosions showered debris in the area.

"(The woman) appeared to be unconscious at the time. I was able to pick her up and drag her away from the flames and smoke," Loontjer said.

The Federal Aviation Administration had investigators at the scene over the weekend.

The Watertown Airport manager believes the pilot has been flying for about two years.

Wisconsin Aviation has its headquarters at the airport. The company provides general aviation services, including aircraft and equipment sales, chartering and flight training.
