Local Teens Eating Hallucinogenic, Deadly Weeds

Doctor: They Try To Fly, Crawl Into Middle Of Streets, Throw Themselves Down Stairs

POSTED: 7:58 am CDT October 3, 2002

Officials are warning area teens looking for a quick high that jimson weed is not the way to get it.

It's put five teenage boys in the emergency room since Sunday, News 3 reported.

The weed's origins go back to the middle ages in history and folklore as a powerful hallucinogen, but experts say it's very toxic and "definitely deadly."

One teen went to the ER for it twice last month, but in the last three days, St. Mary's ER has seen five other 16- and 17-year-old boys come in. All were hospitalized after eating the deadly poisonous weed.

"There are a few weeds that you definitely don't want to go around eating," said Chris Boermoom, a weed scientist at UW-Madison Extension. "Really, there's just a handful of them, and this is one of them."

Jimsom weed is a tall bushy plant with big-night blooming flowers and ragged leaves that grow seedpods.

It's officially called "Datura Stramonium", but kids might call it "locoweed". Gardeners might know it as "moon flower" or "trumpet flower."

But all are very dangerous, and very hallucinogenic, scientists told News 3.

Dr. Neil Connor's pediatric ICU at St. Mary's has treated six boys for jimson weed poisoning.

"We've had individuals try to fly, crawl on the middle of the streets in the intersections, and so the behavior is just uncontrollable ... and scary," Connor said.

Two boys were admitted just Tuesday night, after eating some seeds of the jimson weed for a high, News 3 reported.

All parts of the plant are poisonous, and only a small amount may produce very toxic results.

The last five boys got their seeds from jimson weed found right off the road. Three boys coming back from Milwaukee on the Interstate heard about it, and found it off the highway, News 3 reported.

Doctors are warning teens they can die from the effects of the hallucinations, or the weed itself.

"I want them to quit taking it, so that they won't hurt themselves," Connor said.

Connor told News 3 that if you eat or smoke jimson weed, you can go into a coma and die of respiratory arrest.

Symptoms after ingestion include a dry mouth, flushed face, dilated pupils and bizarre behavior, such as throwing yourself down stairs or picking things out of the air.
