Cow chips are a dried pile of cow manure.

The chip-throwing competition is held annually on Labor Day weekend, but the chips need weeks to fully dry before they're ready for throwing.

"Last year when we picked, so many were really light that you couldn't even throw them," said Russ Ballweg, who has chosen the chips for 20 years. "They would just break apart. These are really nice, there's a nice consistency to them, nice size. Once they dry out then they should be around the right weight to throw."

The state cow chip throw is Aug. 29 and Aug. 30 at Marion Park in Prairie Du Sac.
