MADISON, Wis. -- Once popular with just a handful of drivers, now Hybrid vehicles are becoming commonplace on the nation's roadways. The increased popularity of Hybrids is reflected in the increased popularity of the annual Hybridfest celebration, being held during the Dane County Fair at the Alliant Energy Center. At the event, area Hybrid lovers put their fuel-friendly vehicles on display, as well as their passion for their energy-efficient cars.Timm Zumm, a rural mail carrier who uses his own vehicle for his job, said, "Since I started using the Toyota Prius to do the mail route, I went from about eight to nine miles per gallon to 40 miles per gallon plus doing the mail route."Attendees at Hybridfest are also given driving tips designed to help save fuel."We're finding that drivers are really the biggest cause of inefficiencies in fuel. And once people learn how to improve their driving habits a little bit, they can make their cars run a lot further on a tank of gas," said Paul Goldman, CEO of JuicedHybrid.com.Hybrid owners also participated in what is referred to as a Miles Per Gallon Challenge to see which drivers can go the farthest on the smallest amount of fuel. Some drivers were able to surpass 80 miles per gallon during the challenge, WISC-TV reported.
