The ex-motorists officially "divorced" their cars at an event at the High Noon Saloon on the city's East Side on Thursday night. The celebration was organized by Madison's Community Car.

This is the second year Community Car sponsored the "Divorce Your Car" event.

The new divorcees said that as much as they loved their automobiles, they love saving money and the environment.

David Zaks said he's happily divorced his 1993 Mercury Sable.

"It's fulfilling and I know that I'm not polluting the environment anymore and I know that I'm not causing traffic and potential injuries and really helping the air quality of my city," he said. "And … I'm not spending on gas, I'm not spending on insurance."

About 22 percent of Madison's Community Car members have already divorced their cars, officials said.
