After a three-month custody battle, 12 horses were taken from an abusive home in March and most were malnourished and had upper respiratory infections, WISC-TV reported.

Healthy again, five of the horses have new homes but seven still need to be adopted.

"This is something tough, especially for a nonprofit shelter, that we've had to undergo ourselves so we definitely need all the help we can get, any financial support," said Gayle Viney of the Dane County Human Society. "It's just been a tough burden, we just want the best. We're looking out for the best interests of these horses and we want to do the right thing for them."
