Lake Delton Homeowners To Meet With City, Deal With Lake Onlookers

Many Residents Don't Have Flood Insurance

Updated: 3:42 pm CDT June 23, 2008

Homeowners on Lake Delton will meet with city officials on Monday about what happens next.

Some residents don't have flood insurance and now some don't have a home after a torrent of rushing water ripped apart homes on June 8. The 267-acre lake disappeared in a matter of minutes when the earthen dam along County Highway A gave way.

The man-made lake was swollen by heavy rains and cut through the highway, sending the lake's water down the nearby Wisconsin River. It destroyed or damaged a handful of lakeside homes in the process.

The damage continues to bring hundreds of gawkers to Lake Delton to see the nearly empty basin and destruction left when the lake overflowed earlier this month.

Randy Perryman of suburban Chicago made the trip on Saturday to the lake he has seen in better times.

Lake Delton residents said such visitors are a mixed blessing.

Pat Schultz estimates more than 1,000 people walked through her debris-strewn yard to see the lake before the area was eventually cordoned off with police tape.

But business owners say they are grateful for people stopping at their restaurants, gas stations and other businesses hurt by an overall drop in tourism.

"The Tommy Bartlett Show" general manager Tom Diehl said every dollar spent helps the local economy.
