Dane County authorities are investigating an incident in which a Fitchburg police officer shot and killed a man early Saturday morning.

Authorities said that about an officer responding to a report of a disturbance about 1 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of High Ridge Trail arrived at the scene and was confronted by an uncooperative and combative man who was holding a length of coaxial cable.

Authorities said the officer tried to calm the man down and drew his Taser gun.

Authorities said the man knocked the Taser gun out of the officer's hand, repeatedly struck the officer's head and tried to take his gun.

The officer pushed the man away and fired one shot from his sidearm, which struck the man in the chest, killing him, authorities said.

Authorities identified the man who was killed as Juan Manuel Avalos-Cisneros, 27, of Fitchburg.

The Fitchburg Police Department requested the assistance of the Dane County Sheriff's Office investigating this matter. Also participating in this investigation are the Dane County Coroner and Dane County District Attorney, who were present at the scene.
